Project Update: Best Practices

Chapters to begin release next month

By The Climbing Initiative | October 27, 2021

Here at The Climbing Initiative, our volunteer staff has been working for the past year to publish the first truly global best practices for the development of climbing areas and communities.

In the early days of our nonprofit, we met dozens of climbing communities and organizations all faced with similar challenges and opportunities. They were asking questions like:

  • How can I develop an effective gym to crag program?

  • What should I know when organizing a climbing festival?

  • How do I ensure the community I’m building is inclusive and welcoming to all?

  • What steps can I take to build positive relations with locals and landowners?

Climbers are an innovative bunch. Many organizations and individuals have developed creative solutions to these quandaries. But those lessons are often kept locally, and not shared globally.

By sharing lessons learned in the development of climbing areas and communities, we can help climbers everywhere thrive.

To do so, we have tapped the expertise of climbing leaders around the world, from Peru to the Philippines. These authors have taken the time to share what they wish they had known when they began their projects, in hopes of helping others shape their work more effectively.

We will begin releasing a small number of chapters in November 2021, with a full launch planned in Summer 2022.

In the meantime, get to know our authors!

Our chapters are accepting “experience boxes” (small features of innovative strategies used in the climbing world). If you would like to suggest an experience box, or if you have an idea for a future chapter, please reach out to bestpractices@climbinginitiative.org
