Around the world, there is unequal access to critical skills for climbing leadership, including guiding, mentorship, wilderness first aid, crag development, routesetting, environmental protection, and organizational development. This gives certain communities advantages over others in growing their climbing communities safely.

Our Climbing Leadership Fund addresses this inequity by equipping emerging climbing leaders with the skills they need to build effective climbing organizations and share climbing with other members of their local community. Through multi-year partnerships, we support climbing leaders as they shape and implement their vision for the future of climbing in their own context.

With more equipped climbing leaders, we will see this sport maximize its potential for positive impact and see the ripple effects of sustainable tourism, social change, and environmental protection. This investment is provided at no cost to local climbing communities, funded by the generous donors of our Climbing Leadership Fund.

  • This is an invitation-only program for existing GCI partner organizations. Climbing Leadership Fund projects are customized to each unique country context, but typically involve a robust curriculum in nonprofit leadership and organizational development, as well as collaboration on impact projects led by local vision. Because participation in our CLF program requires more than a year of dedicated partnership, we specifically invite organizations we have worked with before who have a proven track record of success in programmatic work, and a dedicated team of staff or volunteers with the bandwidth to invest in the development of their local climbing organization. Current GCI partners who meet this criteria should discuss future eligibility for CLF with their GCI contact if interested. Organizations that have not yet collaborated with GCI should apply for our Gear Distribution or Community Grant opportunities first.

Help us invest deeply in the growth of local climbing organizations around the world. Support the Climbing Leadership Fund to equip climbing leaders with the skills and resources they need to help their communities flourish!
